4) Its not about what the Promise Land is, but Who the Promise Land is. Our Promise Land is Jesus. John 14:6,7; Ephesians 1:17-23.
In Numbers, chapters 13 and 14, the people were disheartened because of the negative reports of 10 out of the 12 men who were sent to explore the land of Canaan. In other words there were more negative, fear engendering reports than positive reports (the reports of Joshua and Caleb). The problem was not so much the report as it was the conclusion the 10 men came to, “… We can’t attack those people; they are stronger than we are.” And they spread among the Israelites a bad report about the land they had explored.” They said, “The land we explored devours those living in it. All the people we saw there are of great size. We saw the Nephilim there (the descendants of Anak come from the Nephilim). We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them.” Numbers 13:31-33. The irony was the greatest giants that they had to face was within themselves: fear, anxiety, frustration, doubt, weariness, rebellion, unbelief, etc., and it was those giants that would prevent them from entering any promises of God because all the above were gods they worshipped and they would not be parted from them. They refused to go into the Promise Land. The would not listen to Caleb and Joshua. Numbers 13:30; 14:1-12 (Key verses, 6-9). They wanted to go back to their bondage in Egypt, then they wanted to kill those whose report lined up with God (once again choosing the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil instead of the Tree of Life which is Jesus. We continue to do this same thing today. I say this to our shame). When God made it clear what their rebellion and unbelief was going to cost them, they were sorry, but not repentant. 2 Corinthians 7:8-10. They tried to make up for their “error in judgement”, deciding to enter the land in their own strength and were soundly defeated and would spend 40 years in the desert until that generation that opposed God died. Read Hebrews, chapters 1-4. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to die in the desert (the world) when I can live in the Promise Land (Jesus).
5) If you can’t add or take away from the Written word, neither can you add or take away from the Living Word – Wow! Proverbs 30:5,6; Deuteronomy 4:1,2; Matthew 5:17-20; 2 Timothy 3:16; Revelation 22:18-21.
