Trust/Rest

Where there is Trust, there is Rest or better yet, there is NO Rest where there is NO Trust. Hebrews 4:1-11. (Note: All scriptures in my blogs are from NIV translation unless otherwise noted). Key verses are Hebrews 4:4 (Genesis 2:1-3) and Hebrews 4:9,10.

Trust is Faith. “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see”. Hebrews 11:1. “For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what they already have? But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently”. Romans 8:24.

The New Webster’s Encyclopedic Dictionary of the English Language’s definition of Faith: 1) Confidence or Trust in a person or thing. 2) Belief that is not based on proof. 3) Belief in God or in doctrines of religion. 4) Belief in anything as a code of ethics or standard of merit. 5) A system of religious belief: the Jewish faith. 6) The obligation of loyalty or fidelity to a person, promise, engagement, etc. 7) The observance of this obligation, fidelity to one’s promise, oath, allegiance, etc. 8) In Faith: in Truth, in Deed.

Derek Prince was quoted as saying, “David could say, in the midst of pressures and war and things that were going very badly all around him, ‘I will lie down and sleep in peace.’ Why? Because his security depended on the Lord. Not on situations, not on circumstances, not on the broken promises of men, but on the eternal, unchanging promises of God’s own Word.”

With this in mind, let us reexamine Psalm 23 (NKJV), that David wrote which exemplifies Trust and Rest (I heard recently and I agree that Psalm 23 is encouragement for the living, not a funeral dirge for the dead):

The Lord is my Shepherd. Isaiah 40:11; John 10:11-13. I shall not want (lack). He makes me to lie down in green pastures. Ezekiel 34:14 (read the entire chapter). He leads me beside still waters. Revelation 7:17. He restores my soul. Psalm 19:7. He leads me in path’s of righteousness for His name’s sake. Psalm 5:8; 85:10-13. Yeah (Yes), though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death. Job 10:21,22. I will fear no evil. Psalm 5: 5-7; 27:1-5. For You are with me. Isaiah 43:1-7. Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. Hebrews 12:4-11; Proverbs 3:5,6. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. Micah 7:7,8. You anoint my head with oil; my cup runs over. Psalm 92:10; 133. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. Psalm 92:12-15.
