THE CENTURION

PREFACE

NOTE: I am not a Bible Scholar. I am just a person who reveres God’s word and wants to proclaim only what He would have me proclaim. All scripture is from NIV unless otherwise stated:

John 1:1-4: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God. He was with God in the beginning. Through Him all things were made; without Him nothing was made that has been made. In Him was Life and that Life was the Light of all mankind. The Light shines in darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

2 Timothy 2:15: “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and correctly handles the word of Truth.”

Hebrews 4:12: “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.”

John 14:10: “Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather it is the Father, living in me who is doing His work.

The Centurion

Definition: Commander of a hundred soldiers in the Roman army.

Matthew 8: 5-13: “When Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to Him, asking for help. ‘Lord,’ he said, ‘my servant lies at home paralyzed, suffering terribly.” Jesus said to him, “Shall I come and heal him?” The centurion replied, Lord I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go’ and he goes; and that one, “Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him, ‘Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith. I say to you that many will come from the east and west, and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” Then Jesus said to the centurion, “Go! Let it be done just as you believed it would.” And his servant was healed at that moment.

The centurion understood authority and recognized the Authority in Jesus. He knew that just a word from Jesus was enough to heal his servant and his servant was healed. He recognized that authority. He trusted that authority. He submitted to that authority. He believed that authority-FAITH. Luke 7:1-10.

I would like to give two examples of such authority in the Old Testament: 1) Joseph: Genesis 41:1-45 (key vs. 37-44). 2) Moses: Exodus 18; Deuteronomy 1:1-18.

Jesus is our role model in the New Testament because He was and Is under the authority of God and carries that Authority forever. John 5:16-30; 7: 16-18; 14:10-14,24; 16:12-15; 1 Corinthians 3:18-23.
