In 1976, Stevie Wonder came out with an album called, Songs in the Key of Life. I consider this album, Stevie Wonder’s Opus (his best composition). I am not promoting the album, I want to make a statement concerning it as a secular album. This album was a composite of Stevie Wonder’s world: His political ideology, people who were important to him, Black History, the world he was raised in, his relationships, his religious views, women, the birth of his first child, etc. To me Stevie Wonder gave his fans a look into his soul.
With this in mind, I kept thinking of the title to his album and it hit me that our lives as Christians should be Songs in the Key of Christ. Our lives should be an open songbook to the world of who Jesus Christ is, what He did, not only for us, but for the world. Each aspect of our lives is part of our testimony of who we were before Christ came into our life, when He came into our life and how He continues to walk with us every day of our lives.
As Christians, our lives should show the world what we believe; how we should treat others; why the Bible is our handbook in navigating this ever darkening world; why we can have Joy and Peace in a world that has none; our relationships with one another in the body of Christ; the Love of Christ within us; the fact that though we are not perfect, we serve Jesus who is perfect, and how He is perfecting us as we yield our lives to Him.
All this to say that our lives are our Songs to a lost and dying world. We are giving the world a look into our very souls. Our Song may differ from one another, but it should be a Song that pricks a person’s heart and make the hearer want a song of their own to sing to the glory of God.
When the body of believers come together with their songs, it should be harmonious; with no notes that are flat or sharp. Each note is perfect, beautiful, and powerful. It is like listening to an orchestra. You are aware of the different instruments, but they all come together as one sound. Believe me when I say that satan fears our Songs above all else. He will do anything to silence us. He will do anything to keep our Songs full of discord.
We must be determined to sing our Songs in the Key of Christ. All too often we want to sing our own songs and then we wonder why they are full of sour notes.
May our lives be Songs in the Key of Christ to the glory of our God.
Psalm 133 (NIV): “How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity! It is like precious oil poured on the head, running down on the beard, running down Aaron’s beard, down on the collar of his robe. It is as if the dew of Hermon were falling on Mount Zion. For there the Lord bestows His blessing, even life for evermore.”
John 17:22-26 (NIV): “I have given them the glory that You have given Me, that they may be one as we are One- I in them and You in Me- so they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that You sent me and loved them even as You have loved me. Father, I want those You have given Me to be with Me where I am, and to see my Glory, the Glory You have given Me because You loved Me before the creation of the world. Righteous Father, though the world does not know You, I know You, and they know that You have sent Me. I have made You known to them, and will continue to make You known in order that the love You have for Me may be in them and that I myself may be in them.”
